Five
We celebrated our 5th month as Mr&Mrs today.
We had planned on trying out a new restaurant every month on our ‘monthsary,’ but our budget is tight right now. Instead, we celebrated at home with a home-cooked meal instead. We had pesto spaghetti (using Clara Ole pesto), fried chicken, and salad (which is just lettuce and sliced tomatoes) with store-bought Italian dressing, washed down with lemon (mine) and apple (his) San Mig beer. Dessert was brownies from Brownies Unlimited.
It was a happy, simple celebration.
Thank you, Lord, for 5 beautiful months.

…
Someone’s sending me lewd emails. At first I thought it was just spam, but then there’s mention of Abet and my recent marriage (which anyone who has access to my Facebook page, my Twitter, and my blogs would know about). I’m disturbed more than anything. I was so bothered earlier that I couldn’t go on working and had to go on Pinterest (yes, thank you Pinterest) to make myself feel better.
I don’t understand why people do this, how anyone can get pleasure out of doing this. It’s saddening.
I’m bracing myself in case there are more to come. Abet advised me to just delete any future emails, to not read them anymore, and I’m going to do just that. I can not let this affect me. I do not deserve this.

Today is unhealthy food day
There are days when my husband is away from morning until late in the evening, like today. This means that I’ll be eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner all by myself.
Now, I try my best to feed my husband healthy meals, but on those days when I have to eat all my meals alone, I console myself by eating junk.
For breakfast today, I had a pack of Cheez-It and a bar of Big Bang. I’m now waiting for my lunch: McDonald’s delivery of a large cheeseburger meal, spaghetti, and caramel Sunday.
Now, what’s a good dinner to have for later?

Cat in heat
Our kitten Phoebe started going in heat yesterday. It caught us off-guard since she’s just five months old. Our two older cats didn’t start heating until they were at least eight months old.
Phoebe is the noisiest of them all. Our two other cats didn’t make as much noise when they were heating. Instead of getting annoyed, though, we can’t help but feel sorry for her. She’s practically a baby–just a tiny, tiny kitten–and it’s disturbing to see her in so much discomfort. We don’t even know if she’s already allowed to mate at this age.
We’re going to take her to the vet after her heat passes, we’re going to see if she can already be spayed. I’ll probably go crazy with her noise if she ever does this again.

I don’t mean to be degrading
The guy who collects our trash every morning is a mentally-impaired man whom everyone calls “Ulo,” short for sira-ulo (retard). I really don’t want to call him that because it’s degrading, but he really doesn’t have any other name. When I ask him what his real name is, he doesn’t respond. He can’t hold a conversation.
Not my fault, now.

Do Not Disturb
Dear Husband,
Please be warned that I might not be able to prepare your meals and baon, clean our home, or respond to any amorous advances in the next couple of days. I will try, but I cannot promise. I am reading The Hunger Games and I cannot put it down. Full wifely duties will resume once I read all three books.
Love,
Me
P.S.
Please make sure the pets are fed.

Purple Statice
I got these purple statice flowers for my workdesk last January 6, and they still look fresh and vibrant today after 14 days. I got this bunch for only P20 at Dangwa since these were just leftovers.
I love how long-lasting and low-maintenance these flowers are. They don’t need to be soaked in water, which is a very good thing since my cat likes to knock things over, and my vase sits right beside the laptop.
Flowers really do a lot to brighten up my work space, and I’m glad I discovered this variety. They don’t need replacing at all, not until I tire of them anyway. In that case, I can just transfer them to another part of our house.
I’ll buy a bunch of these flowers for my parents’ house as well, I’m sure they’ll enjoy having these pretty purple things around.

Sick Kitty
Our little Phoebe-cat is sick, and it’s just breaking my pet-momma heart.
She started having bloody pee yesterday. We suspected that it was UTI, and a visit to the veterinarian today confirmed that.
Poor Beef-Beef. She went wild at the vet after being given two shots. She’ll be on antibiotics for a week: an oral suspension to be administered using a syringe and a tablet to be mixed with her kitty treats, both to be given twice a day.
I hope our baby Beefur gets well soon.

Polish-less
I put on nail polish on my fingernails earlier today for the first time in three months. I haven’t painted my nails since I got married. I used to love getting manicures and pedicures before. In fact, I have quite a collection of Essie nail polish. I still get pedicures from the nearby beauty salon, but I haven’t gotten any manicures. As I was putting polish on my tips, I wondered why it took me this long to paint my nails again.
And then I had to go wash the dishes, and I suddenly remembered why.

On to a healthier 2012
Abet and I dream of being grandparents in love–old and gray and wrinkled over the years but still very much in love. Of course, to achieve that dream, we need to reach the age of being old and gray and wrinkled (and trust me, I’m trying to delay the wrinkled part for as long as I can). As we start the year, we resolve to take better care of our bodies, to do our best to reach our golden years together.
Our married life was off to a good start health-wise. We quit smoking together right after the wedding. I made sure that Abet ate breakfast every single day (he was not a breakfast-eater before we got married). We lost a bit of weight, although the fact that we didn’t have a refrigerator for a while had a lot to do with it. We also practised major restraint during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, and I’m proud to say that neither of us gained any holiday weight.
Here are our resolutions for this year:
1. Meatless Mondays – According to the website:
Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.
Abet loves vegetables so we can probably have all-veggie days more often, but for now, we’ll commit to no meat on Mondays.
2. Brown rice only – this will cost us since we’re not paying for our white rice right now. Abet gets free rice from UST, we won’t get to use this anymore and we’ll have to pay for our own. The cost–and the effort of having to soak the rice in water for 30 minutes before cooking–will be worth it since Abet and I are both at high risk for diabetes given our family histories, and substituting brown rice for white rice significantly cuts that risk.
3. No softdrinks on weekdays – this is for me. I’m a Coke addict. We have Coke with our dinner several times a week because I keep asking for it. Our blood sugar levels, our waistline, and our budget are not pleased. Therefore, we will have Coke only on weekends. I’d love to say we’ll ban Coke from our home altogether, but that’s not gonna happen. I need my Coke. And please don’t tell me to have Coke Zero instead, I hate that stuff, it’s fake Coke.
4. Only fresh fruits for dessert on weekdays – Abet and I are big on desserts, but we usually have sugar-laden stuff such as a slice of cake, brownies, chocolate, ice cream, or our favorite caramel tarts from Sasmuan. Such a shame because there’s a kariton selling fresh fruit (watermelon, melon, pineapple, papaya, kiat-kiat, etc.) that parks right outside our door every evening. We’ll have that for dessert instead and make Manong Prutas and our bodies happy.
One week into the new year, and so far, so good. We can definitely do this. We have other minor resolutions such as drink more red wine, take vitamins daily, eat less fried food, eat healthier food, etc., and it’s up to me to make them happen since I buy all the groceries and cook all our meals. Actually, ALL our resolutions are up to me since Abet will just eat whatever I serve. Good thing I’m dead set on keeping these up.
Have a healthy 2012, everyone!

A Very Phoebe Christmas
You know what they say: Christmas is for the kids. Well, here at Casa Mesa, we don’t have any children yet, but we have pets. Therefore, Christmas here is for our pets.
Look, Beef-Beef got a gift!
Is that… Whiskas Junior?
Yay! Merry Christmas to you, my humans!
*Actually, we just had extra wrapping paper around the time we did our grocery, we decided to wrap her cat food up so that there’ll be one more present under the tree. But don’t tell her that, okay?

We finally have a table and sofa!
Yep, it took us this long to get essential furniture. How ironic that we went without a table for more than two months when our last name is Mesa.
All this time, we’ve been eating our meals on the stairs. It’s not too bad, we got the hang of it right away, which is one of the reasons why we didn’t really consider it urgent to get a table right away. It was just bad when there was company. One time, Abet bought a bunch of guys over for a drinking session, and they sat Indian-style on a rug on the floor.
Abet’s nephew Ycko and his friends visited our kitten Phoebe last Friday, and this is how they ate their chicken noodles:

I want to re-invite everyone who’s visited our table-less and sofa-less home and had to eat on the stairs or sit on the floor before. We now have furniture to entertain properly, thank goodness.

My husband is sleeping with another girl
Our little kitten Phoebe always snuggles beside Abet, every night without fail. Even if we leave her downstairs when we retire for the night, she’ll come up and go into our room to climb in beside my husband. I find it so adorable, although I must admit that I’m a bit jealous that she doesn’t want to sleep beside me. I like to think that she realizes that if it wasn’t for Abet, she would still be out on the street, sleeping in some dark, dirty alley, and this is her way of showing her appreciation.

29
Happy birthday to me!
This is my first birthday as Mrs. Mesa, and I’m loving every minute of it!
I’m probably the happiest 29-year old on the planet at this very moment. I am surrounded by love–from my family, my in-laws, my friends, my pets, and most of all, my brand-new husband whom I plan to spend all the rest of my birthday with.
The last year has been quite a ride, but I know that there will be more awesome things ahead.
PS.
That photo above is not my birthday cake, I just swiped it off the internet.
